Christmas Greetings from the Balikatan President

Landy with wife Annabelle

Dear Balikatan,

Amidst the busyness of the Christmas season, may you find time to share with your loved ones the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ.  “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  This ‘everlasting life’ was my hope when I was faced with the prospect of a potentially terminal illness a year ago.  If you have Christ in your heart, it is the best gift that you can share with your family and friends — now and always.

On behalf of the Balikatan Board, thank you for all your prayers and financial support to IVCF Philippines and Balikatan in 2010.  May you and your family have joy and peace in your hearts as you celebrate the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Landy Ancheta
President, Balikatan

Nini Ann and Pete Parayno

IV-Cares-Chicago

Pete Parayno writes, “this year is a very special year for Nini Ann and myself because after almost two years of waiting and praying, the Lord has answered our prayers.  The Lord has blessed us with a son whom we adopted from the Philippines.  We have named him Toviel Peter to remind us of Lord’s goodness.  Toviel is a Hebrew name meaning “goodness of God”.  Tovi, who is now 5 years old, is a smart, fun loving boy who loves to sing.  We praise God that he has adjusted quickly and very well to his new environment.”

Dan and Valerie Malabonga with son Julius

Northern Virginia

Valerie and Dan praise the Lord that Julius has been able to adjust to the demands of big-kid kindergarten and the advanced Abeka curriculum at his Christian school. By God’s grace, he can now read very simple sentences, tell time, and do single-digit addition. Their prayer for him is that he will be able to control his high energy and tendency to play inside the classroom; while appropriately channeling these strengths during play with children outside the classroom setting and sports (he is in a basketball team).

DECEMBER 26 PRAYER DAY

“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21)”  As we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, let us also praise God for the children and grandchildren of Balikatan and pray that they may grow up in the wisdom of God.  Merry Christmas to all!

Let’s Pray for the Children

Ray and Peachy Nayre

Kabalikat sa Ontario
The Nayre kids thank the Lord that it is Christmas break already. They are asking for prayers that their Lola (Ray’s mother) can come home (from the hospital) this Christmas. Ray’s mother had surgery a few weeks ago due to aneurysm but by God’s grace recovered from it and is now undergoing rehab. Also, please pray for Jacob, their oldest son. He will  have his Grade 1 practical piano exam on January 25. Please pray that he will do well. Pray that he’ll be able to memorize his pieces.

Pastor Mark Buenafe and Norms Esperanzate- Buenafe

Bay Area Balikat (BA Balikat)
Pastor Buenafe writes, “Please pray for our oldest son Marick who is seeking which path God should take his life’s path: to college or perhaps a military academy option.  Also, pray for our youngest son, Mahal, to continue to persevere in his studies in middle school and his commitment in their orchestra.”

Ernie and Vangie Jimenez

Josie

Praise God for the birth of their granddaughter Josie. Vangie remarks “She is truly a beautiful girl!!!!! Praise God for her life and her lovely smiles! For more information on Josie, please click on the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2poI1AInOY.

Please pray for Elissia their other granddaughter. She is growing and developing well as expected by the grace of God! She is very sweet and very thoughtful! Ernie and Vangie request prayer for her that she will love and trust the Lord wholeheartedly and that she will grow to be a woman after His own heart.

AN APPEAL FROM THE PRESIDENT: PROJECT ALCS

Dear Balikatan Members and fellow IVCF Alumni,

Landy Ancheta

In February 2010, the Balikatan Board created the Alumni Liaison and Communications Specialist (ALCS) role to develop and maintain a database of IVCF Philippines alumni who are residing in North America and coordinate their integration with existing alumni fellowship groups. Mila Pascual took on this role April 2010.

In late June 2010, the maiden issue of the Balikatan Newsletter was published. With Issue #10 released on Thanksgiving, this monthly newsletter complements the Balikatan website in providing Balikatan and alumni events, testimonies of God’s goodness and mercies, praises and prayer requests, and features on IVCF Philippines’ staff programs and activities Members have given positive feedback, such as “excellent newsletter”, “very nice issue”, and “kudos to all”.

The newsletter is a feature of an internet-based system to track IVCF alumni in North America from an IVCF Philippines database. So far we have about 385 names on our list and about 115 names will be added soon. This system also provides donors the option to donate online, and a few members have already started using this online donation system. The Board finds this system effective in expanding Balikatan’s reach to as many IVCF Alumni in North America as possible, reconnecting them with fellow alumni fellowship groups in the USA and Canada, and rekindling their passion for IVCF Philippines. Mila uses this system to manage the alumni database, publish the newsletter, and process online donations (with Edna Bargan, Balikatan Treasurer), and membership applications (with Tessie Askowitz, Balikatan Membership Chair). The estimated first year cost for the system through June 30, 2011 is approximately $2,500 and the estimated annual cost thereafter is $1,000. The Board also decided to give Mila a monthly honorarium of $100. Balikatan depends on the membership fees for its operations, which are mostly spent on remittances of donations to IVCF so that 100% of your donations are received by IVCF Philippines. However, the membership fees are not adequate to also cover the annual ALCS honorarium ($1,200) and annual system service fees ($1,000), for a total of $2,200.00 a year. The Board believes that the ALCS role and the internet-based system are important resources to further meet Balikatan’s objectives and support IVCF Philippines.

You have been faithful with your prayers and financial support. Would you please consider contributing toward the ALCS honorarium and system service fees? We are looking into other options for funding these in the future but we need to pay these bills this fiscal year. Please click here to donate online and click on Balikatan Operating Expenses for designation or send your donations and pledges to PROJECT ALCS c/o Edna Bargan, 31 Chapel Street, Norwood, MA 02062.

May God enable you to do immeasurably more than you can imagine.

Sincerely,
Landy Ancheta
President, Balikatan
(on behalf of the Balikatan Board)

Update from IV Tulungan sa Tidewater

IV Tulungan sa Tidewater met last November 6, 2010 at the residence of Rey and Ethel (Vida) Austria. The theme of November’s meeting was Thanksgiving. We enjoyed a Mexican menu consisting of Mexican menudo, Southwest chicken, Spanish rice, taco salad, taquitos, Mexican coffee, and homemade churros.

By God’s sovereign grace, our fellowship was blessed by the presence of former IVCF Philippines Staff Worker, Elvira Vida. She arrived from Zamboanga, Philippines on October 16, 2010 to visit her sisters, brothers-in-law, nephews, and niece. In anticipation of her arrival, our group requested Elvira to bring us the Thanksgiving message.

Elvira spoke on “Christian Gratitude”. She said that grace and gratitude are closely related. As a springboard, she cited the story of the ten lepers who were healed by the Lord Jesus in Luke 17:11-19; only one came back to give Him thanks. She mentioned the fact that it is hard to be grateful in times of trial, though we are supposed to. Obviously, it is easy to thank God for nice things in life. Elvira shared a lesson she learned about Romans 8:32, “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (NIV) She pointed out that “all things” include everything in life – good or bad. She told us that in 2 Corinthians 4:15, we can see the relationship between grace and thanksgiving. When we see God’s grace, we become grateful in everything and for everything. Elvira concluded with the exhortation to the group: “We are to see everything in the light of God’s grace. Our lives should revolve around Romans 8:32 – constantly acknowledging in humility that we are undeserving, and our response should be that of gratitude to Him, for whatever He brings our way.” In response to her message, the group sang, “Count Your Blessings.”

On December 4, 2010, we met at the Echipares to celebrate Christmas with a “Noche Buena” menu, Christmas songs and games. We had fun playing the “Christmas Bible Trivia” game by Elvira Vida and the “Name the Title of the Christmas Song” game by Erish Vida. Efren Echipare gave the evening meditation:A Christmas Acrostic. IV Tulungan sa Tidewater, VA wishes everyone a “Merry Christmas!”

Thanksgiving Greetings from the Balikatan President

I would like to greet our Balikatan members and IVCF alumni in the USA a Happy Thanksgiving!  As you spend time with families and friends over the long weekend, may you find time to count your blessings and thank God for His faithfulness and goodness to you and your families over the past year.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you once again for your continued prayers and financial support for the ministries of IVCF Philippines and our alumni in missions.

2011 Conference: A Test for Balikatan West

The Berkeley conference next year is turning out to be a test of faith, hope, and love for Balikatan West.  It is a test to trust God in His faithfulness to provide for all our needs, in the hope of having our own regular regional conference in the West Coast in the future, with the spirit of love for God and each other as our driving force.

September was a month of meetings between Bay Area Balikat (BA Balikat), LA Alumni Committed to Serve (ACTS), Seattle and Vancouver groups.  On Labor Day weekend, the Juarezes (Alejandro, Leni, Rene, and Melanie) along with Lilia Salazar-Nigro and Norma Andres fellowshipped with 7 ACTS members:  James Odango, Jane Galazo, Jennie Kizito, Lilette Cruz, Susanne Santos, and Hermin & Norma Briones.  It was held at the home of the Brioneses to also celebrate Norma’s 25th anniversary of immigrating to the US.  Two former staff workers were present (Leni Juarez and Norma Briones) along with representatives of three generations of Kawayan camp:1958 (Norma),1968 (Leni) and  1977 (Lilia).  ACTS expressed their support to BA Balikat as they can relate to its needs after hosting the 2008 conference at California State University in Northridge.  Praise God!

The last weekend of September was also a productive time with both Vancouver and Seattle groups.  On September 24, Lilia met with Jojo Remigio (another Board member) and Vic & Ruby Perez over Chinese buffet dinner in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.  Ruby Ilustre-Perez, originally from Bacolod, was a Graduate Team (GT) member in Baguio where she and Vic met, one of those IVCF love stories that ended happily in marriage!  Ruby and Lilia exchanged warm memories of their old, cold Baguio days, where Lilia was also a GT member.

Many of their members were not able to make it to this meeting for various reasons.  Apparently their group was very active and they met regularly when they hosted the Balikatan conference in 2005 at University of British Columbia.

Alma and Boyet Sarmiento were the generous hosts of the Seattle meeting on September 26.  Alma is the sister of Amor Rivera-Hallowell (an IVCF staff married to another staff worker, Jay Hallowell) and was involved with NCF.  Boyet used to attend Baguio IVCF.  The dinner meeting at their place was graced by the presence of two speakers in next year’s conference: Eric Tadeo, a lawyer/mediator now based in Vancouver, Washington and Miriam Adeney, a missionary and anthropologist now living and working in Seattle.  Eric came with his wife, Vivian.  Miriam who used to be an IVCF staff worker knew Eric and Vivian from their active student involvement with SVCF Diliman.  The two speakers along with Lilia were able to clarify, discuss, and firm up the conference topic of being Filipino Christian witnesses in the US and Canada.

Balikatan West will pass God’s test.  By His grace, we will be faithful, hopeful, and full of love.  Please pray for our preparations for Balikatan conference next year.  See you in UC Berkeley on July 1-3, 2011!!
Lilia Salazar-Nigro, Balikatan Board Member and Conference 2011 Director, vn6003ls@att.net

NOVEMBER 25 – PRAYER DAY OF PRAISE AND THANKS

Today as Balikatan’s monthly Prayer Day and America’s Thanksgiving Day, “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” (Colossians 4:2). Let us praise God and thank Him for the following:

1. For faithful and cheerful donors: For the first time in many years, IVCF Philippines has been able to pay their staff workers on time this year and there was even a surplus from last year’s budget. All these are from the generosity of alumni and friends from the US, Canada, and the Philippines who gave despite our ongoing economic crisis.

2. For fellowship among Balikatan members and friends: The various groups and chapters have been involved in several activities to provide social and spiritual support to each other as they have shared in our newsletters. Their IVCF bond has stayed strong through the years.

3. For prayerful support to IVCF Alumni in Missions: Some alumni in missions have recently been featured in our newsletters. They are God’s witnesses in many parts of the world and their IVCF training has been instrumental in their equipping for God’s work.

4. For the ministry of IVCF Philippines: About 40 staff workers under the leadership of Erickson Velardo and the Board of Trustees have been faithfully serving God in student work. Per Erickson, IVCF Philippines is one with IFES in making Prayer as one of their core commitments. For details of their ministry, please refer to www.ivcfphil.org.

5. For wisdom and guidance to Balikatan Board: Decisions have been made that had great impact on Balikatan due to their unity and commitment to God’s work.

6. For ALCS and Etapestry: Alumni Liaison Communication Specialist in the person of Mila Pascual (in her inspiring hard work) and our internet program Etapestry are a perfect combination that have enabled Balikatan to regularly communicate with each other.

7. For healing of the sick: Many of our members have been healed from serious illnesses. Some have shared their struggles on our newsletters, others were more open to their local groups, and all have experienced God’s grace and love.

“Let us come before Him with thanksgiving¡ For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods.” (Psalm 95:2-3).

IV CARES Rehearses for Annual Caroling Fund Raiser

by Pete Parayno

IV CARES met on October 10, 2010 to discuss plans for fund raising for the 13th month pay of the IVCF Philippines’ staff this coming December.  We have decided to continue our annual caroling but made some slight modifications on how we are going to do it.  Last year, we held the caroling in one of our members’ houses and we invited our friends and donors to the affair.  This year we are planning to hold the caroling on 2 dates, December 11 and December 18, and at two different locations. We hope that this would allow more people to come and attend our caroling.  Our rehearsals will be held once a week and will start on November 14.  Dorie Bermudez will be conducting our choir.  Please pray for strength and good health for everyone in our group.  Pray that we will be able to invite many people to the caroling and we will be able to raise a good amount for IVCF.  May the Lord be glorified in this endeavor. For more information about IV CARES please email Pete Parayno paraynop@yahoo.com

BALIKATAN 2011 CONFERENCE REGISTRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED!!!

By faith, Bay Area Balikat (BA Balikat) decided to extend the conference deadline to April 30, 2011 for regular registration and June 15, 2011 for late registration.  Commuters (lodging on their own) can register through June 15, 2011 also. (Please see registration forms for details of the registration fees.  Registration forms will be sent to you on a separate email and will also be posted in the Balikatan website shortly.) This decision was based on feedback from many Balikatan folks about the difficulty of making plans until spring next year. BA Balikat finalized its reservation for 125 attendees as required by UC Berkeley before December 1, 2010.  Of this number, BA Balikat will pay for 100 individuals’ meals and rooms, whether or not 100 attendees show up to the conference.  St. Augustine said this one time: “Without God we cannot; without us He will not.”  Our core group of about 10 individuals know we cannot host this conference without the Lord.  We also believe that God will not work in us and through us unless we be willing to take this step of faith.  Please pray for each of the 125 individuals who will attend this conference that God may prepare their hearts and minds and provide the money and time they need.  We are excited in seeing attendees from as far as the Philippines.  We are hoping to revive our Balikatan West groups.  We are looking forward to the continuous support of our Midwestern and Eastern loyal Balikatan members.  See you in Berkeley next July! -Lilia Salazar-Nigro, Balikatan 2011 Conference Director vn6003ls@att.net

MEANS Annual Retreat 2010

By Lina Padilla

“….Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8)”
This was the theme of the 23rd annual MEANS Retreat.  There were around 42 attendees including guests at the retreat held in Southwest Michigan from September 4-6, 2010.  Our guest speaker this year was Pastor Godfrey Serfino from Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church in Bacolod.  He spoke on the theme and challenged us to live according to Micah’s charge to the Israelites during a time of great sin.  We were also challenged during our small group discussions as well as personal reflection after our each session  with Pastor Godfrey. After our last session, we spent some time preparing and meditating on a personal declaration based on the retreat’s theme.   As we shared our personal declaration to God, it was evident how the Holy Spirit impressed upon each individual’s heart on how to apply what we learned.  It was a moving experience. God has answered our prayers to be reenergized, refreshed, reinvigorated, and recharged.

Faithful Service

At the retreat, MEANS recognized a couple and their two children for volunteering faithfully for over 20 years. Another couple who have served MEANS for 15 years shared their story on how they became involved with MEANS. Truly, the hand of God was evident on how these couples became a part of the ministry.  Being an all-volunteer organization, we praise God for providing MEANS with people who have a heart for missions and are willing to contribute their gift and skills to the ministry. Our volunteers meet every third Saturday of each month to process the gifts that we receive for missions.

New Waves 2015

The board and officers also discussed our strategic plans for the next 5 years.  Two of the board members, Anne Violanda Benthein and Amy Javelosa Rio, are IVCF alumni.  In conjunction with the theme, MEANS plan to partner with mission organizations that are helping the poor, women, and Filipino children at risk; be involved in training ministry leaders and pastors; and come alongside with Filipinos who are serving in foreign missions.  To date, we have sponsored 95 Christian leaders/pastors to include 12 IVCF staff and 17 NCF leaders and members to attend Global Leadership Summit (GLS) Philippines at Christ Commission Fellowship from November 5-6, 2010. GLS’ purpose is to equip, encourage and to help them become effective servant leaders.

Christmas Projects

This December, MEANS in partnership with a local church in Bacolod, will distribute about 800 thongs (flip flops) to poor children who walk barefooted to F.F. Gonzaga Elementary School.  MEANS will also sponsor a Christmas party for ISCF students of Good Shepherd’s Fold Academy and Orphanage in Guimaras, Iloilo. This will be done in cooperation with IVCF West Visayas staff and an IVCF alumna in Canada.  We will also send balikbayan  boxes to Samaritana, an organization working with street women and Precious Jewels, a ministry that help children at risk and children living with parents who have HIV/AIDS.

We praise God for His continued leading, promptings and whispers to MEANS in 2010.  Soli Deo Gloria!

Reflections on the Journey

by Ernie Jimenez

In the 55 years of my life, I am amazed and humbled by our loving Father’s provisions, sustenance, faithfulness, and steadfast love towards me. Admitted in 1972 to a university offering high-quality but low-cost education was a special blessing. My parents ‘ joint income wasn’t enough to send me to school. I did not have the talent to survive rigorous training, but looking back I now see God’s very neat scheme of allowing me to graduate majoring in IVCF and minoring in Sociology. It was His grand way of introducing HIMSELF to me.

Fast forward, in 1982 I got married, was blessed with two kids, migrated to the US in 1987, and linked with Balikatan in 1989.This connection gave my family a two-dimensional view of God’s continuous work in IVCF- Philippines and His unceasing work in the lives of those who have migrated to North America.

In 2002, we welcomed our lovely granddaughter with joy and pain. Joy because she is a gift, pain because she was born out-of-wedlock, as a result of a teen pregnancy. This shook my faith to the core, but His grip on me is much stronger. As a line in a song states, “He makes everything beautiful in His time”. The experience matured my daughter, changed her life from a directionless teenager to a God-committed mother, wife, and now a youth leader. To us, the experience taught us to forgive and trust God’s purposes and gave us a glimpse of His tender heart.

There are pains in life only God can soothe and explain. My mom died in a car accident as the vehicle they were riding hit an electric post on a very clear day. Vangie’s mom was the person driving the vehicle. She survived, my “Ima” did not. Yet His grace proved to be sufficient even in this seemingly unfair incident. His thoughts and ways are truly higher than ours, my mom now enjoys my dad’s (he died about 6 years before) company in God’s presence.

In 2008, I was diagnosed with stage 4 Non-Hodgskin’s Lymphoma. Even as a believer, I was shocked by the news. My older first cousin died of cancer a few years before. My aunt passed away because of cancer. This is on my mother’s side. Cancer took a few lives on my father’s side too. Again God showed me that trusting Him completely proves that “my life and times are in His hands” as the psalmist wrote.

Though these losses generated fear, the calming assurances of God’s full control over me manifested itself in many ways. God knew way ahead I will have this disease. Thus he provided me with a loving wife who is also a nurse. Our migration to the US, benefits me with modern health care. Who knew my primary care physician that we chose in 1989, is actually an internist- oncologist. So even in the choice of a doctor, God had his hand on my illness. Work changes allowed me to work from home enabling me to continue working while undergoing chemotherapy. At present, my friend describes me as, “mas malakas ka pa sa kalabaw”, which can be translated as “You are stronger than a water buffalo or a carabao.”

So I can conclude that be it in rigorous education, severe disappointments, tragedy, near death sickness, and uncertainty of the future, God our Father, continues to be our hope and rock to whom we are anchored to. HE ALONE IS TO BE PRAISED!!!! And to Him we shall always be grateful!!! Amen and amen.

IVCF Alumni in Missions

Dennis and Bernadeth Honrubia

My wife and I were both active members in a campus based ministry known as Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) of the Philippines. My wife led a cell group and has led non-believers to our saving power of our Lord Jesus Christ. She graduated from IVCF’s intensive one-month training in Cebu known as Kawayan Camp in 1991. I graduated from the same camp in 1990. We were actively involved in many leadership trainings conducted by IVCF and were eager to learn more. We have learned practical leadership skills and experience when we were given an opportunity to organize student leadership and discipleship camps. IVCF all was known for its “student led” ministry. Our Ate’s and Kuya’s have encouraged, trained and inspired us in our walk and service in the Kingdom.

Kalasag Christian Fellowship-Polytechnic University of the Philippnes Dennis Honrubia -Front Row, First from Right

After I graduated with a degree in Architecture and my wife in Computer Engineering, we decided to find a better life in Singapore. Some of our dearest friends went into full time ministry. I was never convinced that I was called to full time ministry. I worked for an Architectural firm and my wife worked as Systems Support Coordinator. We were involved with Filipino Bartley Christian Church which was led by Pastor Celeste Cruzat. The church grew in numbers as a result of earnest united prayer. I was later invited by our Pastor Celeste to be one of the associate pastors. She was very instrumental in ministry calling in our lives.

God’s calling in our lives started to unfold once again. My parents and my sister who live in the United States had wanted for my wife and I to come to America. They prayed for this desire along with their bible study group. God’s direction became clearer when I had an opportunity to come to United States to work for another Architectural consulting firm. Our passion and our vision for the lost kept growing. Our desire to prepare for full time ministry also grew. God was slowly putting the pieces of the puzzle together. We started attending Christian Life Ministries in Folsom, CA with our parents. Pastor Bill Terry who was the senior Pastor at that time asked us to be pastors of another church. We served the Lord through that church for about 2 years. While serving as pastors, we had an opportunity to study at a Bible School in Sacramento California. We graduated in 2003 at the Pacific Coast Bible College with a Masters’ Degree in Practical Theology.

We were able to rekindle our relationship with Pastor Glimar Melo who is our friend all the way back in College where we served the Lord through Kalasag Christian Fellowship. He visited us a few times on his way to a conference in Columbia. His life in the ministry and his encouragement was instrumental for us to plant a church. Our humble beginning was conducting a service for a facility of senior citizens. We have diligently conducted weekly services for individuals in wheelchairs and crutches and some hearing problems. We prayed for healing and comfort. Little did we know that the caregivers who were assisting the elderly were also listening and paying attention to the Word of God. The official church was started and recognized in December of 2003 with 25 members. As we prayed, the life and calling of Nehemiah became very inspiring to us. Our calling was to proclaim the true builder and re-builder of lives. Thus, the name Nehemiah Ministries International with a subsidiary known as Builder Of Life Church. Both of our secular career continues to support the ministry. I was offered a job in Utah as Architectural Project Manager to oversee design and construction of churches all over the nation. My ministerial calling and Architectural experience was the main reason for the job. God called us to start another church in Salt Lake City. Currently we have about 25-30 individuals attending our worship service in a rented auditorium.

We are very grateful to IVCF Philippines. The training we received from IVCF was very important in preparing us for our ministry today. We learned how to expound the Word of God in its fullest, how to organize an event, how to be creative and also how to work with available resources. All these things were part of God’s plan of preparing us for the work ahead. Website:  http://www.jmjwebdesigns.com/builderoflife

IVCF Alumnus in Missions

Ces Valdez

Ces Valdez-2nd from left

Back when I was a freshman in college, the Lord used the ministry and members of State Varsity Christian Fellowship -Manila (IVCF Chapter in University of the Philippines Manila) to open my heart to know Him. It was also in SVCF where He raised me up to love His word and the community of believers. He also used those 4 years of college to hedge me from where I came and to where I was going, and truly the Lord’s grace was more than sufficient even then and up to the present time. Tthe Lord is truly a faithful Father, abundantly gracious, and His mercies indeed endure. They endure even in my stupidities. I am convinced that His sending me to South Thailand is His giving me a second opportunity to straighten up my act. The vision He gave me for His work here in Yala particularly at Yala Rajabhat University is to see men and women from the ranks of teachers, students and even the staff, whether \B– or M, coming together to worship Phraa Yesu/Isa Al-Masih, and studying His word on a regular basis. This is my fourth year of English teaching here and I am willing to do it however long the Master wants me to stay. There are lots of opportunities to share the gospel here even inside the classroom, so please pray that the Lord will open the hearts and minds of the members of this yru community as they hear the good news and draw them to Himself. May we, my co-workers and I, truly serve as salt and light in this corner of His harvest field, for many to hunger after Him and come to know Him as He wants to be known. Thank you again for your prayers. The enclosed picture is of my sister and niece (from Roseville, CA), and a fellow tentmaker, when we went for a little island vacation here in south thailand. May the Master especially guide you all.

Update on 2011 Balikatan Conference

University of California, Berkeley

Please pray for the Bay Area Balikat (BA Balikat) group as we make a decision regarding the early registration deadline on November 15, 2010. It appears that many Balikatan folks may have difficulty meeting this early registration date due to work schedule. Even if the registration date is moved to a later date, BA Balikat has its own deadline of December 1st to tell UC Berkely the number of attendees, 80% of which they are committed to pay before the actual conference. Please pray for wisdom and guidance as the BA Balikat committee meets on November 6 to make this huge decision. On a lighter note, we have already decided on the colors of the conference to be orange and black in honor of the San Francisco Giants!! Hooray!! On a real serious note, pray that BA Balikat will be GIANTS OF FAITH in trusting that the Lord will provide all our needs for the conference, that God will hand-pick the individuals who will attend from as far as the Philippines, that more West Coast Balikatan will be mobilized to come to the conference, and that the loyal East and Midwest Balikatan members will continue their support to our yearly conference. Let us claim God’s provision as He has been faithful to Balikatan in sustaining its 27 years of annual conferences.

Let’s Pray for IVCF Staff

Ara Morales

My confidence is the Lord’s. My hope clings to Him. He is the one who will bring new enthusiastic young hearts. Now, it is a different picture, having a new staff (Tonee Agustin) as companion and new level of work load. Last July, I started meeting students in their campuses. I am assigned in two pioneering campuses (UP Baguio and University of Baguio-UB) and regional administrative work. I enjoy the fellowship, study and prayer time during Friday nights at IV Home. The variety of IV Home activities open opportunities and provide as venues for friendship evangelism. Though, I still struggle with keeping or looking after some administrative concerns of the IV Home, this ministry serves as an important venue not only for me but also for the dwellers and visitors for growth and learning. I enjoy cooking new recipes and discovering cheaper dishes for the students. I enjoy reading and studying, surely there is a lot to learn and to discover. Read more….
