Balikatan 2009 Reflections 4- Ramon Rocha III – OMF International, Missionary – Philippines

July 23rd, 2009 by

ramonrocha1Thank you for the privilege of attending Balikatan 2009!

Thank you for facilitating that my registration fees were covered.

Thank you to everyone who worked hard. The conference this year was a wonderful blessing. The content of the sessions were excellent. The overall program was exemplary.

Thank you for the joy of sharing my journey towards serving the Lord in missions. I thought the Lord used the film showing to touch the hearts of those who viewed the life story of J.O. Fraser. I do join you in your desire to see in the future the Lord calling someone to be a Balikatan missionary from North America.

Thank God for your warm fellowship and that of our fellow IVCF alumni and friends from Thursday to Sunday

Balikatan 2009 Reflections 3- Valerie Malabonga – Northern Virginia

July 23rd, 2009 by

I gained multiple blessings from Balikatan 2009. It was such a blessing to…

• See everyone cheerfully and humbly pitch in and help the Michigan group. Thus, even though the Michigan group is a small group, they were able to put up a great conference.
• Listen to Edwin Erni’s report. IVCF Philippines is accomplishing great things for so little money. The total budget of IVCF Philippines would be equal to the salaries of 3-4 federal or state employees. Talk about cost-effectiveness. The growth of the movement and the staff is so encouraging.
• Listen to our home-grown IVCF speakers, Ate Lisa, Ate Naty, and Ate Melba. Their wisdom and eloquence are so moving.
• Discuss our struggles living in America, keeping it real and honest.
• See the joy in my 4-year old son’s face as he plays with the other Balikatan kids; see the happiness in the adults’ faces as they look at my rambunctious son.
• Reflect on what God wants me to do in this season of my life and for my desire to be so quickly answered by my being elected to the Balikatan Board.
• Serve such a wonderful bunch of fellow believers in the US and the Philippines, and what a privilege it is to be a part of Balikatan’s leadership just when we are contemplating the future direction of our beloved organization.

Balikatan 2009 Reflections 2- Samuelson family

July 23rd, 2009 by

The Samuelson Family – Grand Rapids, Michigan

Hannah (2nd Generation Filipino-American, age 14) – Balikatan is a great experience for all ages. This year was one of the best years and everyone agreed to it. I really liked the session on “Keeping faith and Identity in a Multicultural World” because there were discussions on what was hard about being a Filipino and what’s great.

I also liked the Youth Group. As a 14 year old, I could talk and share and they understand what I am talking about. I have learned a lot through the experiences they shared and the advice on what it means to be a Filipino and a Christian. Getting together at this Balikatan is a great way to meet Filipino Christians who have kept their faith inspite of their hardships and troubles.

Nathan (Pinoy Ako) (2nd generation Filipino-American, age 17) – I think I was most particularly moved by the response I received after my speech during the bi-cultural family session. It was nice to know that my words were influential, especially to families who have children that are ready and able to engage in both sides of their heritage. I have also learned that many Filipino parents are aware of the struggles of bi-cultural families, even the identity struggles of their children, and it was encouraging to hear stories of specific struggles the second generation has had to deal with. Many families have expressed their appreciation that they have themselves decided to provide an encouraging and nurturing environment for their kids in order for them to understand that they are not just Americans or Canadians, but Filipinos as well.

Elma – ISCF, Good Shepherd, Guimaras; IVCF, UP- Iloilo – I really enjoyed this year’s Balikatan because I had the opportunity meeting and working with people whose value and commitment to Balikatan are inspiring. Being involved in this year’s Balikatan has brought me to a deeper understanding of the mission and purpose why Balikatan was formed. I am encouraged to see long lost friends whose hearts and commitment to the Lord have never wavered and continued to stand firm even with the test of time.

Paul – ( Married to Elma) There were several things at Balikatan that really made an impression in my life. First, the talk about Singing God’s Praise in Psalm 96 reminded me about the need to be enthralled with God and what He has done for us: namely, that we should constantly thank God for His faithfulness, acknowledge His sovereignty, celebrate His goodness, and enjoy His love and presence in our lives on a daily basis. We should constantly sing of how great our God is and declare His glory to the world, His great works of providing our salvation and accomplishing “great works” in our lives. Our songs should be of praise of worship to God for all He has done in our lives and then declaring this to the world!!

Second, Lisa mentioned the four things we go through in the “Seasons of Life” and the one phase I learned the most was about leaving margin in our lives. Stress comes as we live our lives in a very hectic way without any margin to rest. We need to build some intentional margin of rest in our lives so that we can reflect about what we have gone through and what God is teaching us. Even God chose to rest one day after He created the whole galaxy!

Third, I really enjoyed having Ramon Rocha and Paul Ignacio come and share about their respective ministries or connections with IVCF. It really showed how our prayers and financial support is being used by God to make a tremendous impact in the Philippines and around the world through these two missionaries.

And fourth, the session on “Keeping Faith and Identity in a Multi-Cultural World” focusing on Filipino Immigrant Experiences, Bi-Cultural Family, and Dealing with Cross-Cultural Tensions, was a very fruitful time for me. It helped me to see the tensions Filipinos often face. Patterns such as how to rear/discipline children and how to pass on Filipino language, customs, and values while being a sojourner in a foreign land is something that has to be thought about and intentionally followed through when facing contradictory American values and customs. I especially appreciated Dr. Melba Maggay’s attention and focus on the importance of first generation Filipinos teaching their children Tagalog or Ilonggo because so much of the Filipino culture is lost for the second generation children if they don’t learn it.

Hopefully, during the next Balikatan in Boston, we can continue our discussion on Filipino Immigrant Experiences and build upon what we have already discussed. May the Lord richly bless all of you and your ministries in the respective areas of where you live!!
Mabuhay!

Balikatan 2009 Reflections 1- Paul Ignacio

Balikatan 2009 is over! Many of us are still savoring God’s abundant blessings during the 3 day conference at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We came to Balikatan unaware of what God will reveal to us at the conference. For the past 26 years, we have been meeting annually to rekindle our commitment to support the ministry of IVCF Philippines, to support IV alumni in missions and to fellowship with one another. At the conference, God has spoken to us in many ways: through music, song and dance, laughter, inspiring messages from our speakers and testimonies of our IV alumni in missions. God has revealed His love to us as we shared our pains and joys as Filipino immigrants in the US. The stories that we shared touched our hearts. We cried and prayed for one another. We also sensed the presence of God and felt that he is making a new thing in our midst. We have asked some of you to share your experiences this past Balikatan. May we discern, as we read what our brothers and sisters have shared, what God is saying to us now as revisit Balikatan’s mission and vision.

Paul Ignacio – HIS 1040 Founder and CEO, Virginia Beach, Virginia

It is so good to reconnect with all those precious saints from Campus Impact days. What a blessing to see them. I even met people who’ve prayed for me during my MV Logos years while they were at their IVCF chapter.

I meant what I said about my IVCF heritage. I am grateful to God for it. It has prepared me for my early ministry of the Word, honing my leadership skills, my passion for evangelism and making disciples. Then the Lord built on that with my time on M.V. Logos, with OM ship and OM India. IVCF is part of my spiritual DNA. I am so blessed and really grateful to God for it. At times I feel like I have not given back to IVCF Phil.

I believe coming to Balikatan is a divine appointment for me. Meeting Christy Jutare is the reason why. I really hope people who have resources have taken the opportunity to bless her and invest in her. I think she is one of the most strategic persons in that gathering, who God is using in a very needy region of the world. I almost missed her session because I tried sneaking back into my hotel room to get some rest and save my energy for my coming session. God got me out of my room to hear her share about her work. I had to pick up my jaw from the floor when I heard her share and completely understood her unspoken words.

I believe many don’t understand how isolated she is in so many ways. How she has to operate under the radar of the KGB and Islamic militants.
What a clout of influence! I have spent time and prayed with her. In my next meeting with my Board, I will present her work for strategic worth in that region. I have been in prayer for someone who is working in the Balkans and among the 5 stan countries. I believe I found the person. Let me just say, as the Lord allows and makes provision, we’ll come alongside her thru MEANS. (To learn more about Paul mission organization, visit their website at : www.his1040.org)
