FEB 2009 – On the Road

Dear family and friends,

Hello! ‘Musta na? How has the new year been for you? For us, we’ve only just recently ‘caught our breath’ after 6 weeks of traveling. Allow us to encourage you with stories of students whose hearts are burdened that other students might come to Christ.

I S C F R e g i o n a l V i s i t s

Di wth ISCF Counselors’ Training participants in Iligan CityIn early December of last year we visited three cities to conduct training and consultation for ISCF staff and volunteers. Iligan City (Dec 2-4) was our first stop. There is no ISCF ministry there yet, but most of the college students who came to the ISCF Counselors’ Training were interested in pioneering the ISCF ministry there. Princess, one of the participants, shared her personal vision: ‘I am a follower of Christ, saved and dearly loved…living a life that shows the difference of being a genuine Christian. Pleasing God is my goal and doing His will is my commitment.’

Then we spent the next four days in Cagayan de Oro City. Although there were only six participants, some of them are already serving as counselors in the current ISCF chapter in Corpus Christi and more importantly, some of them have a burden to pioneer an ISCF group in another high school. When asked why they want to serve as ISCF counselors, they jokingly answered that they had been recruited by their IVCF staff. But it was heartening to hear their real (we think!)answers. KC, a student from Xavier University shared that ‘it is God’s love that compels her and that she finds joy in serving.’ KC, KT and Quette are three lovely ladies who have just started to pioneer an ISCF group in Pilgrim Christian College.

Aldwin shared from God’s Word at the weekly IVCF Fellowship meeting in Cagayan de Oro. We met again some students whom we had known only at the summer camps. It was encouraging to see them leading their fellow students and applying what they had learned at Kawayan Camp.

Aldwin spoke at the Cagayan de Oro Panagdait (which means fellowship)Our last visit was to Cebu City where Di conducted the Counselors’ Training on two successive nights. It was refreshing to see some familiar faces. One of the participants was a graduate whom Aldwin had met in Kawayan Camp 2001. Di also worked with him at a college leadership-discipleship camp that same year. The college student we had known then is now a ‘kuya’ (older brother) to the IVCFers in Cebu and is so passionate about directing the ISCF Camp in April. We praised God for the continued service of this young man.

M o r e T r a v e l l i n g

Christmas break came and still we were not home because we spent the holidays at our parents’ home. We enjoyed get-togethers with family and friends. After New Year we were on the road again. We spent a week in Capas, Tarlac for the annual IVCF Staff Conference. Thank God for special times of fellowship and prayer with fellow staff and times of planning and consultation as well. Five days after the Conference ended, we traveled to San Carlos, Pangasinan to celebrate the wedding of a former co-staff.

Student-leaders of the IVCF groups in UP Diliman and Ateneo de Manila plan for IV DAY over dinner at our homeIn the weeks ahead, Aldwin will be helping with Kawayan Camp (KC) preparations as pre-KC Treasurer and Travel Coordinator. Upgrading the IVCF Library and maintenance of the IVCF vehicles are up there on his to-do list as well. He’s been praying for donors for these two administrative concerns and so in preparation for God’s answers he will be drafting project proposals. Lastly, he will be doing a lot of legwork for our National Conference (NC) in December this year as he is the NC Associate Director for Administration.

Di will be working on the course descriptions for the ISCF Camp curricula. Along with Shebel and Joanne, she is also preparing for the ISCF Sibol Camp and ISCF Leadership Camp – Discipleship Camp to be held this summer.

Finally, we will visit Bacolod and Iloilo cities on February 19-21 to conduct ISCF trainings and consultations.

Praise God for the fruitful time of training and encouraging staff and volunteers for the ISCF ministry in Iligan, Cagayan de Oro and Cebu Cities last December. Please pray that the participants will share the vision of ISCF with others so that the work among high schoolers will thrive.

Praise God for our friend, Candy, whose generous donation funded Di’s regional visits this year. Praise God for Aldwin’s church friends and former students, whose donations enabled Aldwin to have the Hilander repaired in time for the LCDC and for Mike who volunteered his expertise for the vehicle repair.

Please pray that our visit to Iloilo City and Bacolod City on Feb 19-21 will be an encouraging time for ISCF staff and volunteers. Pray for Di that the trainings and consultation she will be conducting will equip them further in their ministry.

Please pray for our preparations for the IVCF National Conference in Dec. We are both serving as Associate Directors in NC – Aldwin for Administration and Di for Program.

Praise God that Yana is growing up well. She’s now a toddler – a challenging time for parents! Please pray that we might be wise and consistent in teaching her to do good and shun wrongdoing.

DEAR FRIENDS,

A warm hello to you!

A few more days to go and the ‘warm’ will become hot, hot, hot as summer is fast approaching. Kamusta kayo? We hope you are well. Allow us once again to share our stories.

MERRY TREATS

How our lives are enriched by friends and mentors! Last December, the visit of the Rabuya family from Cebu whom we did not see for 4 years was a real treat for us. We accompanied them in their one- day tour over some places in Bicol. How we enjoyed our time together – going to places and catching up with stories! Then our dear staff mentors, ate Elsie Calalang and Ate Millie Guarin arrived the day the Rabuyas left to do some training among the Graduate volunteers in the region. We were delighted to be with them as well. As they refreshed us, may the Lord refresh them.

We are also grateful for the kindness bestowed to us by people who also support the IVCF ministry. Dr. Justin Novela and his family hosted a Christmas dinner at their home for ministry workers. They not only stuffed our stomachs but showered us with gifts as well. Days later another IVCF graduate, Kuya Tony Litam delivered a basketful of fruits to our house. There were also some dear friends and family members who came to visit and/or gave their gifts- though some did it sacrificially. We experienced God’s generous provision and love through all of them. May they be made rich in every way (2nd Cor 9:10-12).

Attending the week-long January Staff Conference in Capas, Tarlac has been a real treat as well. The times of listening to the Word, fellowship, sharing and praying with the staff family has been invigorating. It was also a time of planning and discussing important matters concerning the movement. During our stay there, we visited the Death March Shrine, Ninoy Aquino’s Museum and ancestral home. Moreover, after the staff conference, Nono’s 6-month sabbatical leave started. What a major treat! May the Lord show His clear direction to Nono as he seeks His guidance and will.

OF HEALING and GRACE

Your browser may not support display of this image.We also experienced God’s healing as series of illnesses beset us recently. After being healed from coughs and colds last month, Mayumi and Makisig (and their two cousins) recently contracted a viral infection (rotavirus) that caused vomiting, watery stools and fever. It was a harrowing experience watching them vomit at the same time, changing kisig’s diaper for the nth time only to be soiled again, touching their bodies hot with fever, and giving them medicine and food but throw them up anyway. We thank the Lord for His grace – they were able to recover after a few days and we didn’t have to admit them to the hospital. We are blessed to have many praying friends and family! May the Lord bless us with good health in the months to come.

Your browser may not support display of this image.The changes in the students’ schedules on the 2nd semester of this school year (08-09) have greatly affected the frequency and number of attendees in the student meetings. Nevertheless, we carried on with the usual round of evangelistic and discipleship activities albeit relatively fewer participants compared to previous years. We had more one-on-one talks with students though. Aside from the weekly bible studies, some highlights of this semester were: climbing a mountain to plant Mahogany trees (and went for a swim at a river right after!); the ISCF Spaghetti party (evangelistic event), holding an evangelistic Christmas party among underprivileged children at a community in Nabua (we might hold a separate ‘party’ for the nanays next year), and campaigning for sexual purity (True Love Waits) among highschool and college students this February. As the school year is about to end, we wrap up chapter activities, choose next batch of leaders, kick-off the graduates and prepare for summer camps. May the Lord raise more students who will serve as light and salt in the campuses and may He continue to equip us to serve in the student ministry. May He raise more people to become our ministry partners who will support the movement faithfully.

Summer Plans

We look forward to our vacation in Roxas City and be with Gerlen’s family on the last two weeks of March. On April, we will be having two camps in the region: the ISCF Camp for highschool students and Pili Camp which is intended to train college student-leaders. On May, we will also serve as camp staff and counselors at the NCR ISCF Leadership –Discipleship Camp. Engage us once again with your transforming power, O Lord!

Dear IVCF Family and Partners,

Thank you for your faithful partnership with IVCF Philippines the past year.  You have blessed us with your prayers.  We joyfully testify that God answered our prayers according to His grace and purpose.

This year we invite you again to journey with us in prayer.  We still have the same calling: to equip servant-leaders for Christ who will participate in the building of God’s kingdom in the world.  But we are now facing new challenges and experiencing crisis after crisis.  We continue to trust in God’s faithfulness and guidance.  Prayer is our expression of this trust.

Please pray for us:

We are recruiting new staffworkers for next school year.  Pray that God would send us workers for the harvest in student ministries.
Our staffworkers started preparations for our IVCF summer training events.  Please pray for our national events: Kawayan Camp, Graduates Team Conference, and Operation Samaria.  There will also be regional evangelistic, discipleship and leadership camps for both high school and college students.  Join us also in praying for the National Conference in December 2009.

Let us pray for Balikatan family in Northern America.  May God bless the meeting of their board members on February 14-15, 2009.  May God sustain our brethren there who are affected by the US recession.

Pray for the meeting of the IVCF Board of Trustees on February 25, 2009.  May the Holy Spirit grant them wisdom and guidance.

We received God’s provisions for our needs for the last 2 months.  Praise God.  Let us continue to ask God for provision for our movement for the coming months.

In the next few pages, read about and pray too for the needs of our regional ministries, and even for the IFES East Asia events.  May God call on more people to be intercessors for IVCF.

Metro Manila Regional Unit

Praise Him for the freedom and privilege we have to stand as witnesses in the campuses. Praise Him for our committed students, volunteers and ministry partners who live and work for Jesus to be known in their respective sphere. Praise God that SVCF Los Banos is now officially recognized by the administration. Praise Him for opportunities to proclaim the gospel in different schools.

Praise God for how the chapters have managed to take off again after the long vacation. Praise Him too for sustaining our staff and volunteers

Please pray for:

Hearts that are ever yielded to God. May students, graduates, and staff remain steadfast and faithful in their daily walk with God. Pray too for the seekers who are attending ISCF groups, Evangelistic Bible study groups in different schools all over Manila. May they respond to God’s loving invitation.

Heads that are submitted to God’s wisdom and direction. Pray for MMRU staff and volunteers as they plan for camps this April and May. Pray too for sharpness and strength of mind for our students (particularly the graduating students) who are taking exams and completing academic requirements.
Hands that are willing and quick to respond to needs. May our students and graduates and staff be joyful and faithful in the work God has entrusted to them. Pray for the different activities that our chapters and groups are having regularly in the campuses. Pray for more workers to help in the campuses. We need volunteers for openings in CEU and FEU. Pray for contacts (students and faulty) in UE Recto who would want to join in re-building efforts again.Pray for more givers and donors. The region remains to be in deficit since July. May the Lord’s provision delightfully surprise us once more.

Western Visayas Regional Unit

Praise God for 19 students who attended our Student Leader’s retreat part 2 last January 23 to 25.We thank God for His provision & for giving Rachel wisdom as she coordinated this event.

Praise God for another newly opened ISCF campus at NOHS.We thank God for 80 students who heard the gospel during our first 3 evangelistic meetings.

Rejoice with Eumir and Mizpah for their baby girl Mariz Praise, born last February 1, 2009.

Pray for our upcoming CTC this February 21. Pray for more students & or graduates who will volunteer as ISCF Counselors especially for the new ISCF group at NOHS.

Pray for the staff & student leaders as they plan for the seniors retreat by the end of February.

Northern Luzon Regional Unit

Praise the Lord for His provision for the new IV-Home in 48 Cabinet Hill.We praise the Lord for the friendship He is establishing withneighbors (students from different campuses) across our flat. These students attending our Friday Fellowship.that IV-Home ministry will continue to be a blessing to our neighbors and we will able to shareGospel and extend God’s lovethem.

Pray for the coming Regional Assembly 2009 on 28 February, with the theme: “Love Abounds”. Pray for unity and love to abound among Baguio and Pangasinan IV peoplethat Evangelism and Mission endeavors will create deep and lasting impact in the lives of our students.God will also raise young blood to serve in RAC. Also pray forRA provision.

We praise the Lord for the abundant financial and moral blessings we receive from IVCF-NL constituents.Pray that many IVCF-NL people who receive the IPADAMAG will be challenged to pray and give for the work of the Lord in NL. Continue to pray for wisdom and strength to flow in and throughworkers-RAC, GTs, staff,student-leaders.

Praise the Lord for leading us to missional partners (faculty and pastors). Pray for good and harmonious relationship with them and pray that God will also lead us to missional students who will partner with us in building God’s kingdom in the campuses.

Pray for the NL staff planning retreat on February 5-7. May our gracious God leadshow us His’s desires for His work in NL. Pray that we will have fresh realizationsof God as we seek His face during our three-dayplanning retreat.

Bicol Regional Unit

1. Please pray for the student leaders in University of Saint Anthony (USANT), Camarines Sur Polytechnic College (CSPC) and University of Northeastern Philippines (UNEP).Please pray that they will be strengthened and encouraged amidst difficulties in handling their campus chapters as members become more and more inactive.

2. Please pray for the evangelistic and discipleship activities this February.May the Lord lead and guide us in our plans so that many students will receive the good news of the One who is the author of true love.

3. Please pray for our weekly BS workshop in Legaspi Cityour every Friday nightthis February on: Commando Evangelism with Ferdie Marano and the Workshop on Workshop by Ate Vylma Ovalles. Please pray for our student leaders in Legaspi and Sorsogon who will attend this training.

4. Please pray for our new set of RAC members: Engr. Alexander Hechanova- Chairman, Dr. Justin Novela- Vice Chairman, Daphne Tablizo-Secretary, Jenela Bengco-treasurer and Kuya Tony, Philip, Leo, Adiz, Manny, Ariel and others who will serve as members of the core group.

5.Thank God for the provision of DVDs and a new DVD player from Heinz and Nancy Ababa-Fussle. Nancy was a former staff and is now based in Winona, Indiana, U.S.A. Please pray for their new ministry in Christian Media Ministry (CMM) under the umbrella of Christian Light Foundation. Pray for more supporters. Pray that these tools will be used by the Lord to minister and to further HIS Kingdom.

Central & Eastern Visayas Regional Unit

Praise God for the successful Membership Convention last December 6, 2008 at Baseline Restaurant. Many of our pioneers from batch 50’s to 60’s came and their presence inspired most of us. More than 77 IVCF members came: 1 from Leyte, 7 from Dumaguete, 5 from Bohol and 50 from Cebu and others were guests from outside the region.

Continue to pray for and with us as we continue to raise funds for our own IV-Home in CEV that we dreamed about! We now have P 17,756.00 as seed money. Please pray for our Regional Advisory Council members and a group of people who will help us raise funds for this project. Pray for supportive donors for this project. We believe that in God’s perfect time, He will allow this project to come into reality!

Pray for the election of our next members of the Regional Advisory Council (RAC) which is scheduled within February – May 2009. Pray for the right persons to compose the next RAC members. Their new term starts in June 2009.

Pray for our upcoming activities this February: Staff area visit to Bohol, Leyte and Dumaguete, Missions Month Celebration, and different workshops about love-related topics to students.

Praise God for the on going camp (KC and ISCF camp) preparations; please pray for God’s provision and for His wisdom upon the working committees.

Northern Mindanao Regional Unit

Pray for our KC delegates, their preparation and provision for their camp fees.

Pray for wisdom and strength for counselors as they plan for the Young Disciples Retreat of Corpus Christi High School. Pray for more high school students to be blessed and to receive the gospel through this activity.

3. Pray for provision for our regional operational expenses and for the formation of our Regional Advisory Council. We need more supporters for the region.

4. Pray for student-leaders and for the revival of some campus chapters here in NM.

5. Pray for safe travels for Jonah and Vina (NM staff) and meaningful interactions with students and graduates in Bukidnon on Feb 20-22.

Southern Mindanao Regional Unit

1.Southern Mindanao IVCFers will have a Regional Assembly on Feb 20-22. Pray for good attendance, powerful messages from the Word, and a refreshing fellowship, with our theme “Revive Us, O Lord…You Are Our Hope”. May we focus on God to revive us and give us hope as individuals and as a region.

2.Thank God for the dedicated lives of our Regional Advisory Council members, namely, Mercy dela Cruz, Dodong Arcenas, Estrella dela Cruz, Juvee Pascua, Grace Alegre, Joy Aspacio, Gideon Estrella, Cheryl Combatir, and Linda Narciso.for the election of four new members who will replace those whose term will expire this February.

3.Thank God for His financial blessing for the region.The graduates are responding to the need and are giving generously. Pray for a staff representative who can make rounds to collect donations. Pray that our students will also learn to give.

4.Pray for our planning andfor theCamp (April 27 to May 2)Mindanao StudentCamp (May 16 to 29).Pray for oneness of heart and mind and for provision of needs for the camp and the campers.

5.Thank God forencouraging workthe lives of our students and grads in SM.Pray for our planning for next school year’s ministry.May God be honored through our spiritual growth as His people.

Human Resource Department

1.Pray for fruitful and refreshing NST 3 on the third week of February. Milli will handle the one for Luzon while Elsie will handle the training in Visayas and Mindanao. Pray for financial provision too.

2. Pray for the preparations for the annual Grad Team Conference (May 17-23, 2009). Praise the Lord for the availability of Faith Village Conference and Retreat Center in Boracay.
3. We are trusting the Lord for the big subsidy needed for the GT Conference. Pray that the Lord will bless the fundraising efforts for this.

4. Shebel Solmia and Lala Pla will attend the IFES Intermediate Staff Training in Bangkok, Thailand on February 21-27, 2009. Elsie will also participate as a resource person. Pray for their preparations and for financial provision. Thank the Lord for the partia subsidy granted by IFES East Asia.

ISCF Department

Di Fernandez will be visiting Bacolod and Iloilo on February 19-22 to conduct training for staff and volunteers. Please pray for fruitful outcomes after the training and for meaningful times of fellowship and consultation with staff and volunteers.

IFES East Asia

Praise the Lord for:

The region is thankful to God for the faithful ministry of Gideon Yung as the regional secretary for the last 9 years. He has brought fresh vision to pioneer and to mobilize student ministry in Cambodia, Macau and Mongolia. He also made frequent trips to restricted countries in order to keep contact and to encourage local staff and student leaders who have been serving the Lord under difficult situation. We are grateful for his enormous contribution and sacrifice to serve the region. He is now serving IFES global ministry as Associate General Secretary. Please continue to pray for Gideon and his new role that he can mobilize global ministry and for his health as he is expected to travel more extensively in the future.

Ung-Seop Shin (new East Asia Regional Secretary) is thankful to God for a newly-appointed regional secretary orientation and training conference which was held in Accra, Ghana on 18-24 January. He met with four other newly-appointed regional secretaries and senior leaders including Daniel Bourdanne (new IFES GenSec), Gideon Yung and Femi Adeleye (both serving as IFES Assoc. GenSec). It was an inspiring experience for Shin to learn more about the IFES worldwide fellowship as he begins his new role in the region.

Please pray for:

Pray for the Intermediate Staff Training in Bangkok on 21-27 February with the theme “Keeping Vibrant, Leaving Legacies.” We expect 45 staff from the region to come to the camp. Pray for TCS Thailand as they have been preparing this camp with their limited number of staff team. Pray also for participants as well as facilitators/ trainers for their safe journey and good learning experience.

Please continue to pray for relocation of the regional office in Kuala Lumpur. Pray for the adjustment of Shin, for his family and for his wife’s health.

Our Guardian God

Greetings in the name of Jesus who is our Guardian God.
How are you?  Here now is our latest prayerletter.

We have traveled to places and just started to settle down again and regain momentum in our ministry and family dynamics here in Manila.  The beginning of the year gives us excitement about what God has in store for us.  Knowing that He is our Guardian God who will continue to journey with us, to keep us hopeful and motivated.  We know that this is true with you, too.  We may have  our first round of difficulties but we have so much to praise the Lord for and we would like to share them with you.

We left Baguio City last January 4 and headed back to Manila for a day of transition before leaving again for our 8-day Staff Conference at Capas, Tarlac. It was a good conference.  We were refreshed and energized.  It was a time of listening to the Lord as a team, praying for and listening to one another.  Though we had a lot of work ahead of us, especially for the summer camps and conferences, we praise God for how He had spoken to us through our sessions and knitted our hearts together.

After a few days of rest and cleaning our apartment unit at the IVCF building, we traveled to San Carlos City, Pangasinan for the wedding of Roselle, a former staff of Northern Luzon.  Erickson was one of the ninongs, Zeik read the Bible passage during the ceremony and Dot sang at  the reception.  It seemed like an IV event.  Most of IV staff were there since it was right after our conference.

We met several people this month.  We’ve seen long-time friends (Dennis Astorga & Nancy Ababa-Fussle), and met with key partners & donors like Kuya Manny & Ate Arlyn Gumapon from Singapore and Ate Lilia Salazar-Nigro, a Balikatan Board Member. We praise the Lord for these good times of  fellowship and reconnecting.

Both of us had an opportunity to speak to students. Erickson spoke at Philippine Science High School during the recollection of students, while Dot taught at the UP Dorm Fellowship.  It was such a privilege for us being with them.  Erickson was invited to preach at Diliman Campus Bible Church, where Manong Bel Magalit is the senior pastor.

On the home front, Zeik, our first born, turned 11 last January 6. Dot baked a cake for him and we gave him new basketball shoes. Then we left for our staff conference that day. He is starting to work harder in his homeschool program.  He also enjoys taking care of Meimei (a pug we are “dogsitting” for 3 weeks), an aquarium of zebrafishes & tiger barbs, and 2 hamsters. The boys are so fascinated with these pet animals.

Jahd had an accident last Friday (Jan. 30).  He tripped over and hit his face on the cement ground at the IV Bldg.  His left front tooth was knocked off and the right one misaligned.  He also had bruises on his right elbow and left shoulder.  Jahd said that it was good he was able to protect his eyeglasses and avoided further injuries.  We rushed him to our dentist friend for checkup that night. His right front tooth was then extracted. So Jahd lost his first 2 baby teeth.  Erickson was in an IVPM meeting that time. We thanked God for Aldwin (also a staff), who drove us to the dentist. Erickson was saddened to see Jahd when he arrived before midnight, but we still ended up thanking the Lord that no major injury happened.  Jahd is now recovering and is still a happy boy as if nothing had happened.

We are coveting your prayers. Please pray for us:

• as we do our assigned tasks  here at the IVCF national office and prepare for the summer camps.
• for Erickson as he continues to lead the movement and as he leads our family.
• Rejoice with us. Dot had a second ultrasound and it showed that the suspected benign cyst in her left ovary was gone. Continue to pray for her health as she manages our home and as a full time staffworker.
• for good health, especially for the Zeik and Jahd.  We had cough and cold after all our travels. PTL! We are all okay now.
• for safety and in all our travels.  Our car “Endureth” is still enduring yet continues to show weariness and old age even with occasional repairs.  May it bring us safely to our destinations.

Psalm 121 was very true to us this January.  And we know that He will continue to watch over all our comings and goings.  We are really trusting in God’s care.
